“A notional-functional syllabus is an approach where the organization of the material is determined with notions or ideas that learners expect to be able to express through the target language and the functions acts learners expect to be able to accomplish (Wilkins, 1976).

 Doddy et al. (2008). Developing English Competencies fits this definition of functional syllabus, therefore our group decide that this text book is developed based on functional  syllabus. 

Raine (2010) in her article on Briminghamuk.ac.uk entitled “A Discussion of the Notional-Functional Syllabus” mentioned that:

“D. A Wilkins (1976), stated that notional-functional syllabus should comprise three categories of meaning: semantico-grammatical meaning (including time and quantity), modal meaning (including an indication of the certainty and attitude of the speaker) and communicative function (including requests, complaints, and compliments, among a vast array of others) (Richards 2001, p.37)”

“Text-based syllabus refers to a type of mixed syllabus that draws on the systematic functional model language that incorporates an increasing understanding of language how language is structured and how language is used in social contexts (Feez and Joyce, 1998; Joyce & Feez, 2012) which is selected and organized around the texts its social contexts (Richards, 2001, Feez, 2002)”

Bashir, M. (2014) “Bahasa Inggris” fits this definition of text-based syllabus, therefore our group decide that this text book is developed based on text-baded syllabus.

Mattison (2011) mentioned that text-based syllabus implies that learning target words through reading texts, such as acquiring words’ meaning and their typical language environment from texts.
