Task 2: Evaluating English Text Books

This book is use Functional Syllabus

Text book: Interlanguage: English for Senior High School Students XI

Priyana, J., Riandi, & Mumpuni, A. P. (2008). Interlanguage: English for Senior High School Students XI. Jakarta: Pusat Perbukuan Departemen Pendidikan Nasional.

Based on website exploration, our group learn from: https://www.ukessays.com/english-language/a-notional-functional-syllabus-essays that a functional syllabus is:

“A notional-functional syllabus is an approach where the organization of the material is determined with notions or ideas that learners expect to be able to express through the target language and the functions acts learners expect to be able to accomplish (Wilkins, 1976).

Priyana, J., Riandi, & Mumpuni, A. P. (2008). Interlanguage: English for Senior High School Students XI.   fits this definition of functional syllabus, therefore our group decide that this text book is developed based on functional  syllabus.

Raine (2010) in her article on Briminghamuk.ac.uk entitled “A Discussion of the Notional-Functional Syllabus” mentioned that:

“D. A Wilkins (1976), stated that notional-functional syllabus should comprise three categories of meaning: semantico-grammatical meaning (including time and quantity), modal meaning (including an indication of the certainty and attitude of the speaker) and communicative function (including requests, complaints, and compliments, among a vast array of others) (Richards 2001, p.37)”

Raine (2010) description about functional syllabus is organized fit the way Priyana, J., Riandi, & Mumpuni, A. P. (2008) organized the material in the textbook.
